“How much motor do I need?” is one of the first questions every boat buyer asks — and one of the easiest to get wrong. The instinct is to reach for the biggest engine the transom will take. But more horsepower isn’t automatically better, and the choice between a single outboard and twins is about a lot more than top speed.

Start with the boat, not the motor

Every hull has a maximum rated horsepower, and the right answer almost always lives in a window below that ceiling rather than at it. The real inputs are how the boat is built, how heavy it runs loaded, and what you actually do with it. A boat that runs heavy and works hard wants different power than one that’s run light and fast on calm water.

Get those straight first. The single-versus-twin decision follows from them.

The case for a single outboard

For most boats in most uses, a single outboard is the right call:

  • Lighter and simpler. One motor means less weight hanging off the transom, less rigging, and fewer things to maintain.
  • Less expensive — twice over. One engine costs less up front, and there’s only one of everything to service down the road.
  • Often more efficient. A single, correctly-sized motor avoids the parasitic drag and weight of carrying a second powerhead you don’t strictly need.

The trade-off is obvious: a single is a single point of failure. If it quits, you’re not getting home under your own power.

The case for twins

Twins earn their keep in specific situations:

  • Redundancy. If one motor goes down, the other gets you home. For offshore work, big water, or any mission where being stranded is a real safety problem, that “get-home” capability is the whole argument.
  • Maneuverability. Two motors let you turn the boat in its own length by working them against each other — a genuine advantage at the dock or in tight quarters.
  • Power for big, heavy hulls. Some boats simply need more total horsepower than a single outboard can practically deliver.

The costs are real too: more money up front, more weight on the transom, more rigging and maintenance, and — at most cruising speeds — more fuel burned to push the same boat.

What fuel burn actually comes down to

Fuel burn is the most misunderstood part of this decision, so it’s worth being clear:

  • It’s about load and cruise RPM, not horsepower on paper. What you burn depends on how hard the engine is working to move the boat at your chosen speed — not on the number stamped on the cowling.
  • Engines are most efficient at a moderate cruise, not wide-open throttle. The most economical way to run almost any boat is at an easy cruise where the hull is up on plane and the motor isn’t straining.
  • An oversized motor can waste fuel. Carrying more engine than the boat needs means carrying more weight and drag, and often running the motor in a less efficient part of its range.
  • Twins don’t simply double your burn — but they rarely beat a right-sized single at cruise. Two motors sharing the load can run efficiently, but the extra weight and drag usually mean a properly-sized single is the more economical setup when redundancy isn’t the priority.

The honest takeaway: the cheapest boat to run is one with the right amount of power for how it’s actually used — not the most.

Swapping motors isn’t just an engine decision. Weight changes how the boat sits and rides, and the rigging — controls, steering, fuel, wiring — has to match.
