Summer is well underway, and if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to get your boat in the water and have fun with family and friends during these hot summer months. People everywhere will be taking their boats to the rivers and lakes, and you will want to make sure that, when people see your boat, they’re impressed by it. That might mean it needs a little cleaning.
Here are some tips for cleaning your aluminum boat:
Start With a Good Rinse
When you’re ready to get down to the dirty work of making your boat look pristine, you may forget one simple first step: Hose off the aluminum first. You might want to repeat this a few times before getting ready to scrub.
Scrub With Soap and a Sponge
The next step in cleaning your aluminum boat is usually a good scrub with soap and a sponge (brass wool also is acceptable). Household powdered soap will work just fine. While this won’t get all the gunk off the boat, it’s an excellent step to take before you move onto the next step.
Clean With Aluminum Cleaner
After you’ve rinsed and scrubbed, it is time to bring in the big guns. This is a cleaner made especially for aluminum. This cleaner is usually sold as a concentrate, so it will have to be diluted before use. Read the instructions carefully, and once you get it mixed properly, it’s time to grab a big scrub brush and get to work.
Polish It Up
For the polish, make sure you use a high-quality, trusted brand. Lower quality polish isn’t as effective and can even harm the material. A polishing ball with a drill is the most effective way to shine up your boat in the most efficient way possible. Once you have slowly covered the entirety of your boat, it will be time to buff one more time with a clean polishing ball.
