Aluminum Boats and Saltwater: What You Need to Know

Aluminum boats are an ideal way to spend the hot summer days out on the ocean. The lightweight material and durability make them an attractive type of boat to have when enjoying the wide-open seas. However, it is important to note that special care must be given to aluminum boats used on saltwater.

Saltwater Corrodes Aluminum

Saltwater can and will corrode aluminum. This does not mean that aluminum boats aren’t ideal for ocean use, but it does mean that they will need a little special attention. The way salt damages aluminum is a process called galvanic corrosion. While we won’t get into all the chemistry behind this type of corrosion, the bottom line is that it can destroy your boat over time.

The good news is that aluminum resists corrosion. Once aluminum begins to corrode, an aluminum oxide forms that protects it from further damage. It’s pretty neat that the chemistry of aluminum works to protect itself. Unfortunately, though, this only will last for so long.

Cleaning Boat With Freshwater Helps

If possible, cleaning your aluminum boat with fresh water after every use will help protect it against corrosion. This is a simple step that can be taken to prevent damage over long periods.

Use Specially Made Salt-Removal Products

There are products out there especially made for removing salt from aluminum boats. With a bit of research, you can find a trusted brand that will help you remove the salt. These products will not only remove the salt but form a protective layer that will prevent further corrosion.

Use Anti-Fouling Paint

Using anti-fouling paint adds another layer of protection to the aluminum of your boat. Painting your boat with this kind of paint can prolong its life by many years.
