The Most Common Forms of Aluminum Boat Damage

Although the benefits of aluminum boats are vast (including their durability and lightweight build), they can still suffer damage, every now and again. In particular, there are some kinds of damages that aluminum boats are going to be more prone to developing.

If you’re the proud owner of a welded aluminum boat, it’s important to stay on the lookout for damage of any kind. Assuming that damage is caught early and repairs are immediately taken care of, your boat will be able to bounce back with ease. However, the longer damage is left to worsen, the more severe it will become, and the more expensive the repairs will be.

Here are some of the most common types of damage suffered by aluminum boats.

  • Loose Rivets –As an aluminum boat ages, and as it is impacted by the hammering of the waves, it will become more prone to experiencing loose rivets. Eventually, it’s possible that welded aluminum boats will develop leaks at their panel joints, as a result of this loose riveting.
  • Corrosion- While marine aluminum is resistant to corrosion, it isn’t totally impervious. Notably, saltwater aluminum boats are going to be the most prone to corrosion, although it’s still possible for freshwater-based boats to experience this issue as well.
  • Aluminum Fatigue- As the name would imply, this is a form of damage that’s exclusive to boats that contain aluminum. As the floor of your boat comes into contact with the waves, it isn’t uncommon for it to begin flexing. Over time, this can lead to damage, eventually resulting in a fatigue crack of the aluminum.
  • Antifouling Paint- Many aluminum boats feature antifouling paint, which can contain copper. The purpose of this copper is to fend off marine growth, although it could also increase your boat’s risk of corrosion. If possible, consider opting for a copper-free bottom paint, designed specifically for aluminum boats.
