Essential Safety Gear for Any Boat Trip

Boating is a fun and rewarding hobby, whether you use your boat for fishing, water sports, or simply cruising through relaxing waters. However, it’s essential to keep a few pieces of safety equipment onboard for any boat trip, no matter how short. There’s also a matter of legality, as the US Coast Guard requires all boaters to meet their safety requirements before casting off.

Before your next boat trip, make sure your vessel has all the necessary safety equipment:

  • Check to ensure there is one US Coast Guard-approved life jacket onboard per passenger. If you have five people on your vessel for the day, you should have five lifejackets onboard. It’s also important to ensure they fit each passenger, so do a quick safety and fitting check before hitting the water.
  • Throwable flotation devices. While the US Coast Guard requires boats over 16 feet in length to have at least one Type IV flotation device onboard, it’s a good idea to keep one on every boat, even small two-seaters.
  • Fire extinguishers. The Coast Guard requires boats under 26 feet to have at least one type B-1 fire extinguisher, and boats 26 to 40 feet in length should have two type B-1 extinguishers or one type B-2 extinguisher onboard.
  • Signaling devices. Being stranded on the open water can be a scary experience. If your boat has a malfunction and you need to call for help, it’s likely you are out of cell service range and will need to signal. Visual signaling devices like flares and strobe lights can be lifesavers, and sound signals like horns and whistles can also help you get the attention of others and call for help if necessary.
